He painted with watercolours almost until the day he died. He was a voracious reader and attended courses at the Seniors Education Centre throughout his retirement. A life-long learner, Elmer earned a Certificate in Administration from the University of Regina in the 1980s. Elmer was proud of the well-rounded generous people they became. He did the same with his grandchildren even as his MS progressed. He helped found the Whitmore Park Community Association, volunteered and coached with his children's sports and music activities. Elmer's passions were his family, community, painting, the outdoors, building/renovating, and sports. He was proud of the integral role he played in building the power grids that serve Northern Saskatchewan. Elmer moved to City Light and Power (SaskPower) where he worked as an engineering assistant for the next 35 years. Soon after he started his career as a draftsperson with Highways. In Regina, he met the love of his life Cecile. He went to school in Gravelbourg until he was 16 when he moved to Regina where he completed advanced courses in drafting at Balfour Technical Collegiate. Elmer was born to Joseph and Anne (Bolen) Schwartz on Octoon their farm in rural Saskatchewan. Elmer is survived by his siblings Ernie Schwartz, Emma Moulin, Josephine Ehman, and Pauline Woiken and by a large extended family. Elmer was also loved by his grandchildren's friends (Cassandra, Scott, Annika, and Yianni) whom he welcomed to the family. Elmer will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife of 57 years, Cecile (Huck), his children Todd Schwartz and Louise Folk Janelle (Schwartz) and Mike Bennett, and their son Ryan Brad and Donna (Hamilton) Schwartz and their children Anthony, Jennifer and Natalie, Adam and Nicole (Schwartz) Putz and their children Owen and Zoey. In her last years, she could be seen performing at various open mics and music events. Sylvia enjoyed painting, Mah Jong, Crossword puzzles (which she always did in pen), and calligraphy, but the most enjoyment she got was singing. And, early on was a part of the More Guts than Talent troupe comprised of her friends Harriet Gottlieb, Marilyn Gottlieb, and Annette Hoffman that did fundraisers for the Temple. She worked there as a Hebrew school teacher for several years. She was also a member of Temple Sholom in Monticello. While a member of JWI, she was involved in fundraising, especially the annual luncheon and fashion show which supported the Children’s Home in Israel. She was a member of B’Nai Brith Women and an active member of the local JWI. Sylvia was very active in the Jewish community. In 1993, along with 2 co-workers, she became a partner in Horizon Printing where she worked for five years before retiring in 1998. After that, she worked as an office manager for Horizon Advertising and Printing. After she moved to Sullivan County, she worked at The Jewish Community Center in Monticello. She worked at Excelsior Meat Products as a switchboard operator, secretary, and eventually traffic manager for ten years. She resided there until moving to Rock Hill in 1962. Sylvia was born in Manhattan on April 1, 1933. It is with great sadness to announce that Sylvia Berger Schwartz, daughter of Bella and Sam Berger, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2023, with her family by her side.
